about

Recorded in 1991 with two separate bands in two cities, "Phonograph" (the quotation marks are intentional, though I can't remember why,) was my first thinly veiled solo album. Having always had issues with exhibitionism, I decided to disguise myself as a band, The Wellsprings Of Hope - tried it again later in Germany with Invisible Juan and it cost me a record contract - anyway...

I was very fortunate to have access to brilliant musicians in San Francisco (through my work with Penelope Houston) and Atlanta (likewise with the semi-legendary Chant who are intact as the backing band on half of these tracks.) I listen back with mixed emotions, of course. There has been a lot of water under the bridge. Two of the musicians who made outstanding contributions, Gregory Dean Smalley and Ralph Carney, are no longer around to thank. Others I've lost track of even in this age of Facebook snooping. I hope they see this though and learn that I am still ever thankful and in awe of their skills.

A few of the songs have gone on to have lives of their own. Australian singer-songwriter John Francis Kennedy included Motel Satellite on his Is This Not Paris album, then again on Second Best - Greatest Hits Volume Two. My longtime collaborator Penelope Houston has given (Going To The) Evergreen the treatment. Porch Bells found its way to Romanian by way of UK chanteuse Jewelia as recently as 2016.

The initial pressing of 1000 CDs is mostly dissipated. I seem to remember getting drunk once and tossing a couple of cases into a dumpster. The retailers wouldn't take it without a barcode. I was unable to get more than the Safety Net logo to lend some legitimacy to the venture - the label was run by friends and I just asked if I could have a catalog number and did the rest from the stat camera at my day job in a graphics shop. Same goes for the heinous original art of the booklet cover. This will have been replaced for your benefit by something equally half-assed, but at least not as stupid looking. Plus, now, believe it or not, I want my name on the front of the thing.
