about

The Wellsprings were never a solid line-up. As interviewer Steve Vernon points out, the only members on this broadcast who appear on the studio album (Phonograph) are drummer Alan Goldsworthy and Patricio Johnson. But there was also never a plan to keep a bunch of people shackled to the project - in fact the fluidity of the line up sorta drove the bus in a lot of ways.

Here, Wellsprings Of Hope appear in the guise of a rockin' R&B outfit, albeit one more informed by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Flies On Sherbet-era Chilton, and Flat Duo Jets than the usual Stax Volt groove. Flat-out rockers bump shoulders with high-octane soul beat numbers with loose saxes and hyper vocalizations. Johnson searches his range for voodoo here, pounding on a Telecaster mercilessly, although at times elegantly as well, proving himself adept in the Steve Cropper school as well as the Arto Lindsay skronk sweepstakes.

It's history, and this line-up was only recorded once. Some of the same players are on the studio versions of later Wellsprings material (You Don't Have To Wait, Get Out Of My Life Woman, etc.) which were recorded in a house by Steve Vernon, who not coincidentally is host of this broadcast. It was hot in that studio.
